Mad Mystic

“Mad Mystic” is a multimedia exploration of what it is to connect with oneself and with another. It’s about a woman, a performance artist, haunted by childhood trauma, and propelled to take risks in order to discover and uncover her own voice. The piece utilizes music, movement, light and shadow, humor, and poetry to combat societal constraints in understanding identity…gender, sexual orientation, and nationality. The main character, “Me,” travels far and finds an artistic community here in New York City, a place that becomes tied to her main purpose in life. In the words of real-life artist Yayoi Kusama, “I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and the only method I have found that relieved my illness is to keep creating art,” she told an interviewer in 2012. “I followed the thread of art and somehow discovered a path that would allow me to live.”
Writer/performer Tomoko Miyagi will play the character of “Me,” and be joined by actors Jane Murdoch and Joey Welsh who will play a variety of roles.
