Over the course of his life, Anton Chekhov wrote over 500 short stories, a highly debated number of plays (14? 16? More?), and countless lovely and strange letters. Considered by many to be one of the greatest writers of all time and credited as one of the fathers of modernism in theater, Chekhov’s words weave stories of love, loss, struggle, and everyday life in a complicated and beautiful country. On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco and Other Substances is not one of those stories. As far as Chekhov is aware, this play does not exist. It is a fragment, a dream, a patchwork quilt consisting of pieces of over 100 of his lesser known works and musings. Set at a dinner party on a frozen winter night, On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco and Other Substances tells an entirely new, yet somehow familiar, story of love, loss, struggle, and everyday life in a complicated and beautiful country. Come for the poetry; stay for the vibe and the caviar, if we can afford it.

About the Company:
Founded in April of 2017 by friends, creators, and theatre lovers, The Social Club is a
Brooklyn-based theatre and performance art company and collective. Our mission is to cultivate
a tangible forum for young NYC artists to create, perform, and share their voices and stories
from a space of love, innovation, and exploration. The Social Club focuses on the creation of
new works and collaborations as well as the reimagining of the classics alongside readings,
