Theaterlab presents the Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup production of
A MY NAME IS
Choreographed by Stefanie Nelson
December 7 – 10, 2017
Choreographer Stefanie Nelson presents the NYC premiere of her work A MY NAME IS…, an exploration of memory and forgetting inspired by the choreographer’s personal encounter with a family member’s dementia. Employing a cast of four dancers and a multidisciplinary team of international collaborators, the work focuses on the phenomenon of gravity (both physical and metaphoric) as well as repetition and disappearance. Nelson builds a gestural vocabulary for the piece the same way as one’s language skills develop and disintegrate over time and uses it to reflect upon memory and forgetting, aging and loss. The special advisor for the project is David Shenk, a bestselling author of The Forgetting: Alzheimer’s: Portrait of an Epidemic. Developed in residency in Italy, the work features stop-motion video by Elisa D’Amico (Italy), original music by composers Sahand Rahbar (Iran/Canada) and Jonah Kreitner (US), with set and light design by Solomon Weisbard (US).
