Show Dates: April 29 – June 6, 2017
Starring: Orietta Crispino, Gahlia Eden, Jolene Noelle & Lanie Zipoy
The women of Theaterlab presented their own short miniatures as the first presentation of Mothers Myths Monsters.
Each piece is rooted in an examination of the complex narratives and vocabularies used to describe and define the feminine experience, which paint women as both comforting mother and terrible monster with bodies that are at once fecund and ferocious. The mythology of women is often domestic and maternal, and yet, as Barbara Creed has written, “all human societies have a conception of the monstrous-feminine, of what it is about women that is shocking, terrifying, horrific, abject.” Aristotle saw women’s bodies as literally monstrous – as botched males lacking in basic essence. Here, the women of Theaterlab explore the incomplete and muddy myths that comprise our personal histories.
Gahlia Eden, Jolene Noelle, and Lanie Zipoy each presented a miniature work–Lacuna, Trypophobia and Meditations (while watching My Own Private Idaho) by Kat Moore, respectively– and Artistic Director Orietta Crispino presented the first iteration of what would later become her full piece Let Me Cook For You.
