THE TRIP presents Paradise. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first novel, This Side of Paradise: a coming-of-age story that deals with dreams, disillusionment, education, and privilege. Critics have pronounced the novel a failure, but it’s also about failure, following a young man’s quest to get to college; his love-soaked slide through college; his booze-soaked reckoning with disappointment after college; and his realization at the end that he’s just “grown up to find all gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in Man shaken.” Using an interdisciplinary approach, wrapping in material from outside the novel, THE TRIP wrestles with this classic and unwieldy work on the cusp of the 100th anniversary of the novel’s publication.
