ABOUT
Point (!blac) is the 2nd installment of the 3-part residency project Point ____ (Blank) by Yoko Murakami at Theaterlab.
For Point (!blac), Yoko will be joined by Argentinian audiovisual artist Fernando Molina. During the covid pandemic, the 2 artists collaborated on a long-distance short film project, where Fernando took the video footages of Yoko dancing, and abstracted them into architectural distortion. “!blac”, a poem by e.e.cummings became the connective bridge between the different art mediums. The resulting short film has been accepted into numerous national and international film festivals in 2022 and 2023. For this residency project at Theaterlab, Fernando and Yoko will work together in-person to create a live performance version of the short film, taking a 2-dimensional art form (film) and reinterpreting it into a 3-dimensional elusive performance experience. The culmination of the collaboration will be presented at Theaterlab on August 31, 2025 followed by an informal talkback session.

MEET THE ARTISTS
Yoko Muakami (Theaterlab Artist-in-Residence)
Yoko Murakami (she/her) is a Tokyo-born and New York City-based artist. She creates movement-based work in forms of site-specific installations and experimental film. She enjoys creating works for spaces that are not traditionally designed for performance and is interested in finding new ways to activate and question the way we interact with our environments. She has presented her creations in spaces like Mabou Mines (New York, NY), Ace Hotel (New York, NY), Triskelion Arts (Brooklyn, NY), Theaterlab (New York, NY), Da Da Da Gallery (Seattle, WA), Eshk Salon / Room Salon (Brooklyn, NY), and Aileyan Accessories (Brooklyn, NY). Her new venture into experimental film has led to her works being selected and screened in festivals in Seoul, Moscow, Naples, Belfort, Cyprus, Mexico City, and Lincoln Center in NYC. Yoko is a recipient of the 2025 NYSCA grant and has served as a Bessies Award Selection Committee in 2022-2024.
Fernando Molina (Guest Artist)
Fer Molina is architect and audiovisual artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The origin of his visual practice is based on the exercise of his profession as an architect, graduated in 1992 at the University of Belgrano, taking from that discipline several concepts of composition and representation techniques.
As an artist, he researches and develops audiovisual projects of a performative and audio reactive nature whose plural and even diametrically opposed edges, all pass through a common sieve in their visualization, design and morphology through the use of machines, digital media and computers.
His most direct influences come from Abstract Expressionism, the gesture of Robert Motherwell, the landscapes of Rothko, the fragments of Kenneth Kemble and Cambre, and the Minimalism of authors such as Judd, Ando, Sakamoto and Carsten Nicolai.
